Orellana, Walter; Cortés, Jorge: CHEMISTRY

CLAIM:
For our senior project, we will launch ourselves on an exploration of the field of chemistry. For the actual project, we will install software onto computers and interface a spectrometer to them. After we have successfully interfaced the spectrometer, the chemistry lab at CCC will be able to utilize the spectrometer to its full extent. Furthermore, we will also create a video demonstrating the copper cycle through a series of chemical reactions.

REASON:
Considering that we are both majoring in fields concerning the sciences, work done in the chemistry field provides us with a beneficial springboard into such areas. Additionally, we plan to carry out a presentation of our senior project at METAS-a program at CCC concerning the academic success of Latino/Hispanic students-and in doing so, we intend to increase the interest of Latino/Hispanic in the science fields.

EVIDENCE:
Thus far, we have successfully installed software and interfaced the spectrometer to a computer. After going through a trial run, the spectrometer seems to be working perfectly. Additionally, we have logged hours with our mentor-Dr. Ledbetter.

VALUE:
Besides acquiring valuable information from our work with the spectrometer and through the chemical reactions we carry out, we will hopefully get more Latino/Hispanic students interested and involved in the sciences.

Jessica Garcia - Collection of Short Stories

Claim: For my senior project i will compose a series of short stories and compile them in a book.

Reason: I chose to do this senior project because i've always known that stories relate to everyone. Regardless of what language they are written in, the themes, the content, that always transcends the boundaries of color, tongue, and creed. We all live the human experience and because of it are connected to eachother by the thread of love, imperfection, family and struggle.

Evidence: Thus far, i have written two short stories with three others in the works. Other evidence is the log hours as well as work done with my mentor, Mr. Cobane.

Value: Those who are receptive to my short stories will see the themes and take in their true message and use it in their lives.

Mary Obasi: Earthquake Preparedness

CLAIM
The focus of my project is to get our school prepared for earthquakes and other disasters. This has been an ongoing project so I have decided to use it as my Senior Project to make sure that it is completed before I graduate. The end product will be a large container on the football field filled with emergency supplies. I also plan on helping students at Middle College help their households more prepared.

REASON
After going to the Leadership Conference in New Orleans last year, seeing the devastation, and realizing that “The Big One” is supposedly coming soon, I saw a need that needed to be met. Also, Contra Costa College is located on the Hayward Fault Line which puts us more at risk. I want everyone to feel safer.

EVIDENCE
- A bin filled with emergency supplies
- Logged hours
- A video completed by Hannah Obasi

VALUE
Everyone values their safety. If I finish this project with a bin filled with hundreds of emergency supplies it would be left on this campus for the many classes to come. It is important to bring awareness about earthquake preparedness.

Juan Cerda: Architecture

Claim: I always been fascinated by the art of the construction of buildings. So for my senior project I will be shadowing an architect and learning some of the basic things he does. After I learn the basics, I plan to desing and create a dog house as a final product.

Reason: My family members (father and uncles) have always worked in the field of contruction. They were the ones that introduced me to the field and ever since then I was fascinated.

Evidence: Since im going to build and design a dog house, I will have the plans and desings all as proff. And as a final product I will have the dog house where my dog can sleep in.

Value: My parents have always worked hard for me to get a better education and have a better life. So I plan to one day become an architect and build houses, something my father did, but this time i will be the one giving out the orders.

Horus Ye: Art

Claim: For my senior project, I'll be doing a personal exploration into the field of art. I will approach and produce works of different mediums and genres.

Evidence: I'll bring in the different pieces to display as an exhibition at school.

Reason: I've always wanted to draw really well like some of my friends.

Value: Producing works of art allows people to expand on their creativity and imagination (I personally think that I don't have much of an imagination). Additionally, a recent study found that doodling during a lecture improves memory. Read the article here

Liu, Kevin : Better Cooking

Claim: For my senior project, I will learn how to cook delicious cuisine. I will learn how to prepare and cook some traditional Chinese dishes (such as chow mein and fried rice) and Vietnamese Pho. Additionally, I will master baking decadent (at least I hope) dessert, such as brownies and pound cake. Last but not least, I plan on making some good BOBA.

Reason: With college looming near, I realize my mom is not always going to be there to cook for me. However, this senior project will give me a chance to take her knowledge of cooking with me whereever I go. I don't want to fall victim to the infamous "freshman fifteen," so I plan on balancing my diet with freshly prepared healthy cooking and the (occasional) dorm food.

Evidence: Along with the probable cookbook and instructional video, I will hopefully serve BOBA during my senior project presentation.

Value: I believe cooking to be a very valuable asset to have, especially for college students and men. Hopefully, this project will become one of the bridges that connects me to my Asian side.

Antonio Lopez - Cooking

Claim: I plan to learn how to cook. I will learn some recipes of food that I enjoy to eat.

Reason: The reason I want to learn how to cook is because one day I'm going to live by my self and there will be no one to feed me. My only option to survive will be to got to fast food chains and ordering take out.

Evidence: I will make a little cookbook of all the recipes I learned to make.

Value: I believe it is important to know how to cook especially for men because not many of them know how. I'll be able to feed myself something nutritious instead of depending on junk food. I will also be able to feed my family in case of an emergency when there is no else to cook. You can't survive without eating

Michael Kiteas, Christopher Kiteas, Amber Parks

Claim: We are going to an elementary school and helping children express their creativity through different activities. We are doing activities based on the children's goals and what holiday is coming up such as Easter. It's fun for them and us. We are being role models to them.

Reason: The reason is because we all love working with children and we feel that they need to do more in school then just work on a math problem.

Evidence: We have made a permission slip for the children's parents so we can film them. We will make a video/slide show to show what we did.

Value: We believe that children need a positive role model in their life. Also they need to be able to express their creativity and take a break from all the learning.

Evelyn Santos: The truth about domestic violence

Claim: Adressing the serious issue of domestic violence, which will be projected through a video on the topic with true stories and information that isn't really discussed.

Reason: Though it's recongnized as a serious issue and has improved through the course of time, I still don't see the topic adressed as the dangerous of drugs is, which to me is just as important. Overall, I fee like more could be done.

Evidence: I have started reading books and even made copies of domestic violence tests and an example of an escape plan which is utilized by those who plan to leave such a relationship.

Value: This project will affect everyone really, but more so the people who might have experienced it first hand or know someone who has or is going through it. I'm hoping that my audience will have a better understanding on the subject and perhaps be encouraged to get involved.

Alva, Gabriela: Culture Through Dance

Claim: I am learning how to dance different Latin dances such as Salsa, Cha-Cha, and Samba.

Reason: I want to become closer to my Latin culture, and since my dancing skills aren't that great, this seems like a great way to do so.

Evidence: I will be performing at culture day.

Value: I think that it's important to maintain one's connection to their family's culture. Sadly, I'm not as connected as I'd like to be, so I'm hoping that by learning the different dance styles of the Latin culture, I'll be able to connect more with my family and culture in at least a social level.

Jasmine Mojica and Angel Asante: The Essence of Music and the Piano

CLAIM

Our senior project is a combination of both teaching and learning. I (Jasmine) am assisting Angel Asante on how to read music notes and how to interpret them on the piano. She is learning how to play a couple of intermediate classical pieces. The catch is that she does not have very much experience, other than taking a piano class with CCC last semester. This makes it interesting and challenging for both of us. Additionally, I hopefully will finish composing my own piano piece as well as writing a vocal accompaniment to it.

REASON

I chose this as a senior project in order to help Angel become a more experienced piano player, but also to get back in touch with playing the piano on a more regular basis.

VALUE

I have played the piano since I was 7; however, when I came to Middle College, I put a pause on being a pianist and played less often. So far, this has encouraged and inspired me to get back to something I never should have abandoned. I wish to make an impact on Angel, as well, to continue learning how to play the piano and to have deeper passion and greater appreciation for the instrument.

EVIDENCE

Toward the end of the semester, Angel and I will be giving a small recital which will include pieces Angel has learned and the piece that I will compose and write to.

Tamillow, Louis

Claim: I will be going through the entire patent process in order to obtain a patent on a fence design. This may either end up in success or failure depending upon the product being different enough from other existing products and the validity of the patent claims. Afterwards, if I successfully obtain the patent, I may try to commercialize it.

Evidence: My evidence will probably be some sort of PowerPoint presentation showing off the the fence design and patent and describing the patent process. It may also delve into the commercialization process.

Reason: The reason I'm doing this senior project is mostly because it is career-related and if successful will give me a leg up in the inventive process.

Value: The value of this senior project is to teach me the motions one must go through as an entrepreneur and to teach me some of the business skills I may need in my future career.

Senior Project – Creating a Comic: Walt Xie and James Heck

Claim: The goal of this Senior Project is to discover and explore the world of comic book art and writing. By combining storytelling and art, the final product will be a graphic novel that will entertain and educate the reader, depicting a variety of subjects such as racism, depression, mockery, heroism, and development of character.

Reason: For the writer, there must be lots of development of the story and several revisions before arriving to the final product. A writer must address many requirements to make a comic successful, such as audience, plot, engagement with the audience, and most importantly, themes.

Comic book art is quite challenging. Not only does an artist produce sequential art, but also each scene must capture the reader’s eye. This helps to develop the artist’s perspective of art as well as draw much more than one object at a time in order to have a coherent picture. The artists will also have to expand his skill set in computer drawing programs like Photoshop and GIMP.

(James' first foray into Photoshop coloring could use improvement)

Evidence: At the end of this project, the evidence shall be:

• Concept Art
• Sketches
• Script
• Writing
• Outlining
• Un-inked sequential art

Value: Although creating a comic book may seem simple and uninteresting, there is a lot of value in completing this project. The artist and writer must become very creative and spend lots of time to develop their work in order to capture their audience’s eye – high school students and older. They must incorporate pop-culture and clever writing to engage the reader as well keep the creators motivated. As a result, comic books can be produced to portray a myriad of subjects in order to educate, and entertain people of all ages, such as world history and politics and ultimately become a tool for education. The skills learned in this project can help expand our abilities in creative expression and build on the future of sequential storytelling.

Travis, Shaina

claim: My senior project is a fashion show that I'm putting on with two other classmates. The fashion show combines all of our individual and collective talents and will showcase them during our fashion show.

evidence: My evidence will be a fashion show put on by all three of us. The show will be vivacious, entertaining, and exciting as we can possibly make it. The fashion show so far is scheduled in May and soon we will hopefully have a solid location to showcase.

reason: The reason I chose this as my senior project is because my future career, hopefully, will be to work for a fashion PR firm. Fashion PR firms deal with Fashion Week and producing fashion shows, etc. This senior project will give me advance practice for the future. It will hopefully familiarize me with the aspects of producing a fashion show.

value: My senior project will give me the skills and attitude I need for a career in fashion PR. This is valuable material I will need in order to succeed, so I'm glad I'm getting it an earlier time then later.

ERiKAAAA

claim:
For my senior project I am working with Chinelo. Together we are going to have a baking demonstration. For my senior project we have made a couple recipies and are trying to create some of our own recipies.

value:
The value of this to me is that I have always wanted to cook desserts from scratch and this is a good chance for me to be able to do that. Me and my aunt have cooked from scratch since I was little but never cakes.

evidence:
those great cakes i make =)

JASMIN FLORES

Claim: I'll be creating a senior project based on the years of high school. Better yet, a project about being a Middle College Student. My senior project is based on how the 4 years of high school have challenged us to be better learners and people.
Evidence: To show my senior project with others, I'll be creating a video based on personal interviews with other seniors and pictures of how high school has been a memory throughout the 4 years.
Reason: I decided to do this project because I wanted to be able to learn how to create a video that others can view on the Internet with pictures, video, and music. I thought it would be a great idea to also show how Middle College High School is different from other public high schools.
Value: I value my work that I'll be putting into this project because it shows how high school has effected other people's lives and how we all have grown as the 4 years have passed. Also, it's a pretty cool thing to compare my view of high school with the other views.

Obasi, Rebecca

Claim: For my Senior Project, I am Volunteer Manager for the 10th Annual Earth Day, which will be on April 25th. I am researching the various ways of saving the environment and the prevention of global warming. Additionally, I will also learn the responsibility and time management of setting up an event that helps spread the awareness and appreciation of our environment.

Evidence: I have already started to write my research paper about the variations of preventing global warming. For EarthDay, I have been contacting leadership classes from all of the high schools in this district to recruit volunteers for this event. I have already recruited about 20 people from our school and plan on meeting with the Pinole Valley Leadership class on April 3rd. I am going to use Powerpoint to present my senior project to my class someday in May.

Reason: I really wanted to get the experience of having many responsiblites to make a difference in helping the environment. It gives me the chance to learn something new and to work with others in doing something positive for our community.

Value: Learning and growing from the experience that I am encountering right now and applying for my future: responsibility, leadership, gaining more knowledge about the envirionment, making a difference in the community.

Jason, Oscar, and Jose

Claim

We will all work in the biology garden that's on campus. Our mission is to contribute to the Earth and to our own community. At the same time, each person will be focusing on one specific main point. Jason will focus on plants and their importance to this Earth. Oscar will focus on global warming and the effects that it is causing and will cause later on. Jose will focus on community outreach and informing the community on being more eco-friendly.

Evidence

At the moment, we have pictures of the biology garden and of other places dealing with nature. There are also short filmed documentaries of people who answered questions such as, "What does global warming mean to you?" and "What do you do that's eco-friendly?" We plan to do other things in the future such as visit Chevron, Target, and a botanical garden.

Reason

We've noticed that life is changing each day due to our lack of knowledge and responsiblity about our Earth and global warming. We know that we can't do much about it because we are only three people, but we have to start somewhere.

Ortiz, Andrea

CLAIM: My senior project is learning how to play guitar. It is an instrument I have always been attracted to and wanted to learn how to play, but I never had the time.

EVIDENCE: I will provide a video of the process of learning guitar and perform a song in the video. Currently, I am learning the piece I will play in the video. It is a sort of flamenco type of song called MalagueNa, which is a difficult song.

REASON: I have always wanted to learn how to play an instrument and guitar was the instrument I was most attracted to. I believe it will be a challenge, and so far it has been because the hardest part of learning how to play an instrument is to loosen up your fingers. But overall, I am excited. :]
